The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra is a Centre of Excellence of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and a regional academic institution with its international lecturers active for research and training. The KAIPTC until the beginning of 2016 has offered over 230 courses in diverse aspects of peace support operations for over 11,000 military, police and civilian personnel from 88 different countries.

The participants are expected to take over leadership in peacekeeping - mainly in West Africa. The KAIPTC has since its foundation in 2003 been supported through the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Defense, the Federal Ministry of Interior and the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation in the amount of more than 20 million Euros. Germany has contributed significantly to the success of the Centre through the financing of buildings, deployment of advisors (military and since 2010 also police), logistical support and through holistic training courses.

Today the KAIPTC is recognized as the most developped Peacekeeping- training centre in Africa, especially because of its close cooperation between its departments of research and training and the consistent implementation of „Lesson-Learned“-experience. It is of huge importance for the implementation of these future training plans of the KAIPTC as well as for the „Distant learning“ programme that the new library has been opened on 1 June 2012. The equipment for the library has been funded by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs with 0,6 million Euro

Being accredited as tertiary institution of education in 2011 KAIPTC offers post graduate Master programs on peace and security issues. Further programs on gender issues, as well as advanced training programs on children’s rights, security of civilians, sexual exploitation and abuse but also on gender equality are to follow.

The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development supports KAIPTC throughout a sustainable development program, which is implemented by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ). Its focus in the current founding period which ends in 2018 is to strengthen the centers efficiency and sustainability. It therefore builds upon previous achievements. Key areas of the program are the continuance of the organizational development process, advancements of the learning management system, strengthening relationships with other key partners in the area, such as ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations, as well as the development of a portfolio management system in order to offer courses on a demand orientated basis. In 2016 the Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Ministry of Defence assist the realization of 18 trainings for police officers and a course on “Maritime Security and transnational crime”. Thereby the center seeks to train policemen for peace missions all over Africa. Courses are funded by the Federal Foreign Office in the amount of 1, 5 million Euros, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Federal Ministry of Defence provide a military and a police advisor.
