Federal President Frank Walter Steinmeier visited the Republic of Ghana from 11 to 13 December. The fact that Ghana is his first destination on the African continent after his assumption of office as Federal President testifies to the excellent relations between the two countries.

Federal President Frank Walter Steinmeier visited the Republic of Ghana from 11 to 13 December. He met Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, for political talks focussed on the development of bilateral relations, perspectives for the young generation in Africa, migration and regional stability.

Further topics of the visit included vocational training, academic collaboration and economic cooperation. The Federal President also discussed these topics in Accra with apprentices at a training centre, students at the university and young entrepreneurs from a start up incubator. Furthermore, the Federal President opened a migration centre funded by Germany, where he spoke with returnees. The Federal President found out more about military cooperation between Ghana and Germany at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre.

The Federal President was accompanied by the Federal Minister for Economy and Energy, Brigitte Zypries, and a delegation of 16 representatives of renowned German companies. During a business round table discussion, organized by the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Ghana, Ghanaian and German business persons exchanged information and experiences. Federal Minister Zypries also hold talks with Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Ghana is regarded as West Africa’s most stable democracy. As the second largest economy in West Africa, it is a key country and important political partner for Germany in the region. It is a major country in the “Compact with Africa”-Initiative under Germany’s G20 Presidency.
