Agenda 2030- less than 5000 days left

German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel urged all participants to act in the name of sustainability at the annual conference for sustainable development on the 29th of May. Nearly everyone is familiar with the topic, but concrete action is necessary now, because there are just 5000 days left for the implementation of the UN Agenda on Sustainable Development till the target year 2030.

For that reason, the German Government passed the German Sustainable Development Strategy, an ambitious roadmap which provides a foundation for the national implementation of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations and their 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG´s).

The purpose of the 2030 Agenda of the UNO and the German Sustainable Development Strategy is to shape the ideas of growth and development in a way that the wellbeing of the future generations is ensured.

Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that “How we manufacture and work, what we transport and how we transport it, how we ourselves get from A to B, how we live and consume – the principle of sustainability demands that we rethink all of these, and that we change the way we act.”

The German Sustainable Development Strategy focuses on the global responsibility and takes into account three levels of German measures: measures with effect in Germany, measures by Germany with global impact and support for other countries through bilateral cooperation.

Sustainability on the German G20 Agenda

Germany’s G20 Presidency too will be addressing urgent aspects of sustainability, including climate change mitigation and energy, global supply chains and trade, health and food security, protecting the environment and the world’s oceans, education, and empowering girls and women. The global community has to stand together to find viable solutions within the next 5000 days.
