Germany and Ghana: Bilateral relations

21.01.2025 - Article

Bilateral relations are friendly. Ghana is a key partner in West Africa, as is illustrated by Ghana’s inclusion in the G20 Compact with Africa under the German G20 Presidency in 2017.

Reciprocal visits take place on a regular basis. Ghana’s former President Akufo-Addo visited Germany on several occasions during his period of office (2017 to 2025), most recently for the Hamburg Sustainability Conference in October 2024 and the Munich Security Conference in February 2024. Chancellor Scholz visited Ghana in October 2023 with a business delegation.

Ghana is an important trading partner for Germany in West Africa. In 2023, Germany’s imports from Ghana amounted to 241.3 million euro. The volume of German exports to Ghana was 251.6 million euro. Foodstuffs, machinery and chemical products are the most important exports from Germany to Ghana, while foodstuffs and raw materials are the main exports from Ghana to Germany.

Germany is represented across the board in Ghana. Among Germany’s political foundations, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung currently have offices in the country. The Goethe-Institut does cultural work in Accra and offers language classes. The German business sector has maintained a Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Accra since 2011, and Germany Trade and Invest has had a representative in Accra since 2014. The German Academic Exchange Service has an information office and supports over 60 German-Ghanaian university partnerships.

The German Government conducts a wide range of activities in Ghana. For example, it is the biggest supporter of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, which trains personnel for peacekeeping missions of the United Nations, the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The German Government also helps to train and equip the Ghanaian army and police.

Ghana is a priority country for our development cooperation efforts. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) and DEG (German Investment and Development Company) all have offices in Accra. Ghana is also an important cooperation partner for Germany in the scientific sphere: Several regional research centres funded by the German Government are based in Accra, among them the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL).
