Visa for getting married in Germany
This means that you want to marry a person living in Germany and subsequently live with this person in Germany.
The following documents are needed for the application through the Consular Service Portal:
| Passport | - data page - passport has to be valid for at least 6 more months and has to have at least two free pages |
| Birth certificate | based on first registration |
| School leaving certificates | WAEC-certificates: BECE and WASSCE |
| Passport of fiancé(e) | complete passport copy of your fiancé(e) (all pages, including data page) |
| Proof of Adress in Germany | Proof of address in Germany of your fiancé(e) (“Meldebescheinigung”), recently issued (within the past six months) |
| Residence permit of fiancé(e), if applicable | German residence permit of your fiancé(e), if applicable |
| Statutory declaration | statutory declaration (as proof of premarital status) declared by one parent of the Ghanaian fiancé(e). If both parents are deceased, a statutory declaration about the premarital status of the applicant has to be made by the head of family. The statutory declaration has to be sworn before a notary public at the place of residence of the declarant. |
| Registration for Marriage | Confirmation of the German civil registry office stating that a date for the intended marriage has been scheduled (“Bescheinigung über die Anmeldung der Eheschließung”) |
| Proof of language skills | Proof of sufficient German language skills by presenting a recent A1 level certificate of an ALTE certified language school. |
| Formal obligation letter | - Formal obligation letter according to § 66 - 68 of the German Residence Act (“Verpflichtungserklärung”), confirmed by the local immigration office - The submitted formal obligation letter must not be older than 6 months on the intended date of entering the Schengen Area/Germany. - For each new visa application one has to present a new formal obligation letter |
| Health insurance | sufficient health insurance coverage for the period of entering Germany until solemnising the marriage |
| Certificate(s) of divorce, if applicable | Ghanaian, German or foreign certificate(s) of divorce with legal note of validity |
| Residence permit for Ghana, if applicable | - only for applicants with a nationality other than Ghanaian, Liberian or Sierra Leonean - please upload your residence permit and additional documents such as rent contract, working contract, electricity bills etc. - if you are residing in Ghana please upload additionally your Non-Citizen Ghana Card |
| Authorisation to re-enter Germany, if applicable | in case of previous deportation from Germany: written proof of authorisation to re-enter Germany issued by the competent immigration office in Germany |
| Old passport with visa, Emergency travel documents, if applicable | evidence of former residence/stay in Germany (e.g. old passport, visa, Emergency Travel Certificate), if applicable |
Your details and documents will then be checked for completeness by the embassy. You will receive feedback as to whether your documents are complete and have been submitted successfully.
You will then receive the link to book an appointment at the visa section. At this appointment, your identity and original documents will be checked, a short interview will be conducted, your biometric data (fingerprints and photo) will be recorded and the fee will be paid.
Please have the following documents ready for the interview:
| Passport | - original biometric passport - valid mininum 6 months, with at least 2 blank pages |
| Visa fee | 75,00 Euro, payable in cash in GHS at the current exchange rate of the Embassy or by credit card |
| 1 biometric photograph | - not older than 6 months - uniform white background - size: 3.5x4,5 cm |
| Original documents | You will receive the information, which documents are needed in the Consular Service Portal |
The processing time after the personal interview can take several months, depending on the individual case and the German authorities that may need to be involved. In the visa process for a visa for getting married in Germany, the embassy is generally required to involve the relevant immigration authority in Germany.Therefore, apply for the visa in good time.
